Schalkenbosch Wine Estate: Tulbagh

Tulbagh lies in a beautiful ‘hidden valley’, surrounded by the Winterhoek, Witzenberg and Obiqua Mountains. The Tulbagh Valley is at the western end of the famous Route 62, which meanders through all the Wineland areas of the Western Cape and Karoo.

Tulbagh is a place to visit and enjoy beautiful countryside and magnificent scenery. To take gentle walks, or hike up the mountains, horse ride through the valley, visit wine cellar, fruit and olive farms.

There are three self-catering cottages on Schalkenbosch which are comfortably furnished with DSTV and cosy fireplaces. The kitchens are fully equipped with small stove, microwave, fridge/freezer and all basic cooking utensils. Each cottage has its own private braai/BBQ area for which firewood is supplied. Safe parking is available on the farm outside your cottage. Should you wish to relax and unwind without the bother of cooking we would be happy to book a table for you at any one of the various local restaurants.

We recommend a visit to the nearby village of Tulbagh with its historic Church Street, in which there are 32 national monuments, museums and restaurants. The mountains surrounding Tulbagh rise to some 2100 metres above sea level. The village is 105 kms from Capetown, an easy drive along the N1, via the R44 through breathtaking scenery. Tulbagh has remained unspoilt since the late 1600’s. It was first settled by farmers sent out by the Dutch East India Company and has a rich history with many colourful characters, such as Lady Anne Barnard whose travels and exploits have been well documented.
