Schalkenbosch Wines

Schalkenbosch Vines

Schalkenbosch Stratus We have bottled our first wine under the Schalkenbosch label. A 2006 southern Rhone style wine made from Shiraz, Grenache, Mouverdre, Cinsaut and Viognier. The wine spent 18 months in new and 2nd fill French and American oak before being transferred to older barrels to mature. This is a really good wine with full body, dense colour and a complex structure.

The nose is very appealing and it is clear that we did not make enough of this big, fruity wine. Only 2200 bottles will be released. This maiden vintage will sell out very quickly and “Schalkenbosch Stratus” will only be available in years where it can match or better the 2006 vintage.

Schalkenbosch BWI ChampionSchalkenbosch Stratus is our first Wine to carry labeling that recognizes our Championship status by the Biodiversity in Wine Initiative, joining 14 other Estates in South Africa, such as Anglo American’s Vergelegen, Graham Beck, Backsberg, La Motte and Lourensford.

The BWI is a pioneering partnership between the South African wine industry and the conservation sector. The goals are to minimise the further loss of threatened natural habitat, and to contribute to sustainable wine production, through the adoption of biodiversity guidelines by the South African wine industry.

Schalkenbosch - CorksSchalkenbosch wines are crafted from carefully selected, hand picked and sorted grapes which are vinified in the cellar behind the main house.

They are then barrel matured in the best French and American oak until they develop the intense flavour and colour which is synonymous with wines produced on our estate.

Schalkenbosch VatesThe Schalkenbosch label is reserved for classic wines of exceptional quality. These wines, taken from specially selected blocks are investment wines and should be stored under controlled conditions. The first two wines of this range will be released in 2009 – one, a Bordeaux style wine and the other in the style of the southern Rhone.

“Schalkenbosch is committed to the conservation and preservation of indigenous fauna and flora and is a member of the biodiversity and wine initiative.”
